Skin tag and lesion removal

Skin tags are harmless. They catch on jewellery, rub under collars and bra straps, and irritate people out of all proportion to their medical significance — which is a perfectly good reason to have them removed.

Moles are a different matter, and this page is mostly about that difference.

What we do remove

Skin tags, including in awkward areas such as the eyelids, neck and underarms. Seborrhoeic keratoses and other clearly benign lesions, once assessed. Milia.

Removal is done with advanced electrolysis or cautery under local anaesthetic where needed. Most appointments take fifteen to thirty minutes and multiple tags can usually be treated in one visit.

When to see a doctor, not a clinic

See your GP promptly about any mole or lesion that is:

  • asymmetrical
  • has an irregular or blurred border
  • contains more than one colour
  • is wider than about 6mm
  • or has changed in any way — size, shape, colour, itching, bleeding or crusting.

A new mole appearing after the age of about 35 is also worth having looked at.

This applies whether or not you ever come to us.

What it costs

From £50 for the first skin tag, with reduced pricing for additional tags in the same appointment. The price for additional tags is confirmed at your appointment, before anything is removed. The check before removal is included in the price.

Common questions

Can you remove my mole?

Not for cosmetic reasons. Removing a pigmented mole with a cautery device destroys the tissue, which means it cannot be analysed — and if that mole was an early melanoma, the evidence is gone. Your GP can assess it and arrange surgical removal with histology where appropriate. We will happily look at it and tell you what we think.

How many skin tags can be removed in one appointment?

Usually several. Most appointments run fifteen to thirty minutes and multiple tags in the same area can generally be treated together. Pricing reduces for additional tags in the same visit.

Will it scar?

Skin tag removal usually heals with no visible mark, though a small pale spot is possible, and on black or brown skin the mark can be darker instead. A scab forms for a few days and should be left alone.

When should I see a doctor instead?

See your GP promptly about any mole or lesion that is asymmetrical, has an irregular border, has more than one colour, is wider than about 6mm, or has changed in any way — including itching, bleeding or crusting. A new mole appearing after about 35 is also worth checking.

What if it is not a skin tag?

Then it is not removed. Anything with an irregular border, uneven colour, recent change, bleeding, or a size above about 6mm is referred rather than treated. We will tell you what we think and where to go with it, urgently if it needs it.

Is the check included in the price?

Yes. Every tag is examined before anything is removed, and that check is included in the price, from £50 for the first tag. The price for any additional tags is confirmed before anything is removed.

Does skin tag removal hurt?

Skin tags do not usually hurt in themselves. Removal is done under local anaesthetic where needed, and you are talked through it before anything starts.

Will the skin tag grow back?

A tag that has been removed does not usually grow back. New ones can still appear elsewhere, which is common as people get older.

Can you remove a skin tag on my eyelid?

Yes, the eyelids are one of the areas we treat, once the tag has been examined. If it is not one we would remove here, we will say so and tell you where to go instead.

Why will the NHS not remove my skin tag?

Because removing a harmless skin tag counts as cosmetic, so the NHS does not usually fund it. It may remove one that bleeds regularly, keeps getting infected, causes constant pain or affects your sight. If that sounds like yours, ask your GP before you book anything.

Can I remove a skin tag myself at home?

The NHS advises against it unless a GP has recommended it, because of the risk of infection, bleeding and scarring. It also skips the step that matters most: someone checking that it really is a skin tag.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. Skin tag removal here is for adults aged 18 and over.
