Skin & Medical Treatments

Plasma pen and skin tightening

Plasma treatment creates a controlled arc of energy that causes tiny points of thermal injury on the skin surface. As those points heal, the skin contracts and tightens.

It is most often used on hooded upper eyelids, where it offers a non-surgical alternative to a blepharoplasty for the right candidate. It is a real procedure with real downtime, and it should be described that way.

Who it suits

It suits mild to moderate laxity in someone with good general skin health who can commit to strict aftercare and complete sun avoidance during healing.

We treat higher Fitzpatrick skin types with particular caution, because the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is real and can take months to resolve. In some cases we will decline. We would rather do that than leave you with marks that outlast the benefit.

What it costs

From £100 per area. Most areas need one to three treatments, twelve weeks apart.

Common questions

What is plasma pen treatment used for?

Most often hooded upper eyelids, where it can be a non-surgical alternative to eyelid surgery for the right person, and otherwise mild to moderate skin laxity. It makes tiny points of controlled heat injury on the surface of the skin, and as they heal, the skin contracts and tightens.

How long is the downtime?

Plan on about a week before you are presentable. A grid of small dark crusts forms across the treated area in the first day or two, with swelling that on the eyelids is often marked the next morning. The crusts dry and flake from about day three and have generally gone by day ten, leaving pink skin that fades over the following weeks.

When will I see the result?

Tightening carries on developing for up to twelve weeks as the skin heals, so judge it then rather than on the day the crusts come away.

How many treatments will I need?

Most areas need one to three, twelve weeks apart. Treatment is from £100 per area.

Can plasma pen be used on darker skin?

Only with particular caution. In darker skin types, healing can leave patches darker than the surrounding skin, and those can take months to fade. In some cases we will decline, rather than leave you with marks that outlast the benefit.

What will I need to do while it heals?

Follow the aftercare strictly and keep the treated skin out of the sun completely while it heals. Do not pick the crusts: let them dry and flake away on their own.
